After School – Cooking

We are excited to bring a virtual after school program for the 2020-2021 school year! Music, art, cooking, and other special events will be offered on a monthly basis throughout the school year! Please note that these programs will be given over via Zoom so access to internet and a computer or tablet is needed.

Who?

Children with epilepsy ages 9-17 

*Please contact us if child is outside age group and wishes to join!

Cost?

-Free, however consistent participation is necessary!

When?

Monthly recurrent activities through the school year November 2020- May 2021

  • First week – music 
  • Second week – art 
  • Third week – cooking class
  • Fourth week – special event

*If a month falls with five Tuesdays the last one will not have an activity 

Where?

-All activities will take place via Zoom. There may be some special event activities that could turn to in-person depending on social distance and COVID-19 safety regulations.

Cooking: Chef Carlos Pineda

Chef Carlos Pineda is the Director of Hospitality and Culinary Services at Rebekah Children’s Services, where he oversees the Culinary Academy and Kneaded Bakery. Born and raised in Gilroy, California, he graduated from Gilroy High School before attending the Professional Culinary Institute in Campbell. He graduated from their Bakery and Pastry Program in 2007, and went on to the Inn at Spanish Bay with Peddle Beach Company where he completed his externship. He then worked as a Chef in Monterey, Carmel, Los Angeles, San Jose, Morgan Hill and Gilroy.

In 2010 he began his career at Rebekah Children’s Services where he helped develop the Culinary Academy. This program allows disadvantaged youth ages 15-25 to learn hands-on culinary skills in a commercial kitchen. In addition, students develop job-readiness skills in a safe, structured, and caring environment that will prepare them for the demands and responsibilities of adult-hood, independent living, and the real work world. The Culinary Academy has since graduated over 1300 students and continues to have a job placing rate of 98% for 8 years straight. In 2014 Chef Carlos completed the requirements to receive his California Teaching Credential for Vocational Education and is currently working towards his Administration Teaching Credential.

Carlos is an avid supporter for the LGBTQ+ community and is a huge contributor to various service organizations in the Bay Area. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce, South County Young Professional’s Network, Gilroy Exchange Club, EL Cajon Project, Leadership Gilroy, and Gilroy Foundation. He is a member of the City of Gilroy Housing Advisory Committee and served as The 2018-2019 President of the Gilroy Sunrise Rotary Club, where he is still an active member. In June 2017 he received the Nob Hill Award for outstanding community service from the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce, and in 2018 was highlighted as one of Gilroy and Morgan Hill Today’s 2018 People to watch. Later that year, he received the Gavilan College Community Spirit Award, for outstanding Community Service. In 2017, 2018, and 2019 he won the Garlic Festival Showdown, donating his earnings each year to the Gilroy Foundation, One Giving Tree and Rebekah Children’s Services respectively. Chef Carlos was recently awarded the 2020 Leadership Gilroy LIFT Award (Lead Inspire Focus Team) for exemplifying what it means to be a leader. Chef Carlos’ motto is to always educate, inspire and lead.
